Tree Lighting Ceremony

We are excited to announce dates for activities during the holidays! All events are family-friendly and free to attend. Add these dates to your calendars now!

The Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony is held annually on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This year, the lights will be illuminated downtown and throughout the Children’s Garden Christmas on Sunday, November 20, after the ceremonial switch is flipped on Memorial Plaza moments after 6pm. Those in attendance will enjoy music, free hot chocolate, and an early opportunity to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus on the City’s square on Russell Street.

Lights throughout the Children’s Garden Christmas and Kids’ Walk will then be on nightly from 5-10pm and 5-9pm, respectfully, each night through January 1. Traffic will be one-way along Riverside Drive from the Lady Fountain on Broughton Street to the Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center from 5-10pm. The drive-thru, walk, and parking are always free.

Santa and Mrs. Claus can be found in the Gazebo of the Children’s Garden Christmas on special nights throughout the season. Santa will visit with children, hear their Christmas wishes, and take photos from 6-8pm on the following evenings: November 25, December 3, December 4, December 9, December 16, December 19, and December 20. Parents of high risk or special needs children who need to schedule an appointment to visit Santa on Friday, December 9, between 3:45-5:45pm should call the Parks and Recreation Department at 803-533-6020 to reserve a time.

The Parks and Recreation Department will be showing a free Christmas movie in Centennial Park on Friday, December 2, starting at 6pm. Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas will begin on an inflatable screen at 6pm. The movie is free, but hot chocolate and movie concessions will be on sale during the movie. Families are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for seating.

Holiday Showcase makes its return this year but to an outdoor venue to be under the lights of the Children’s Garden Christmas on Saturday, December 3. Local dance groups, singers, and performers will be in Centennial Park from 4:30-5:30pm with holiday entertainment. Families are again encouraged to bring chairs and blankets for seating for this free event.
