CCTC Engineering Design Technology Students Collaborate On Award-Winning STEM Project

20

CCTC Engineering Design Technology students Alyssa Law and Katie McMullen were part of a collaboration with Alice Drive Middle School’s (ADMS) STEM team on a project with Continental Tire. The project was to design and 3-D print a barcode reference tool that technicians would later use to measure the barcode location on tires. As a result of this community project and Law and McMullen’s help, ADMS students made 500 gauges for Continental Tire. This STEM Community Project won the 2022 Student-Led Project NSTEM Champion Award from the National STEM Honor Society.

“Katie and Alyssa are two of my first-year students who I assigned to work on a project requested by Dr. Masneaguta at Alice Drive Middle School,” says Rick Lavergne, academic program manager for engineering design technology. “This project has given them the experience to collaborate, guide and lead the 3-D Printing NSTEM Project team. Their expertise in engineering design helped ADMS receive a National award on this local industry collaboration project with Continental Tire. I try to give my students exposure to design projects throughout their tenure in my program. Working on a real-world, local industry design project makes the collaboration and experience exponential. Both Katie and Alyssa exceeded my expectations and greatly enhanced their knowledge of problem-solving skills. When they are ready to graduate, they will be in high demand for our local industries!”
