LGBTQ+ Pride Month occurs in the US to commemorate the June 28, 1969 Stonewall Riots which occurred when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village. This sparked riots between bar patrons and neighborhood residents. The Stonewall Riots were the catalyst for the Gay Rights movement in the US and around the world.
