The South Carolina State track and field teams achieved several personal records during a three-day event at the Embry-Riddle Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla., according to an April 5 announcement.
The performance is significant for both the men’s and women’s teams as they continue their outdoor season. Achieving new personal bests can help athletes improve their rankings within the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and set a positive tone for upcoming competitions.
Head coach Donald Cooper said, “We had a great outing down at Embry-Riddle Classic, it’s always run an awesome meet. We had a lot of positive progression this weekend on both the men’s and women’s team.” Thirteen men and five women from South Carolina State set new personal records during the meet.
Notable performances included junior Tinashe Bure setting a new school record in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:48.96, earning him the top MEAC ranking in that event. A freshman athlete recorded a triple jump of 49 feet, 5.5 inches, placing second in MEAC rankings. Another junior made his debut in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.27 seconds, which placed him third among MEAC competitors.
This was South Carolina State’s third outdoor meet of the season; previously at Morehouse Relays, team members won events such as triple jump and heptathlon while achieving additional MEAC-leading marks.
Looking ahead, South Carolina State will compete next at the USF “South Florida International” meet scheduled for April 11-12 in Tampa, Florida.
