The South Carolina State University softball team achieved a milestone on April 23 by defeating USC-Upstate 5-3 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at Cyrill Softball Stadium. The two teams split the day’s games, with the Spartans taking the first contest 10-2.

This victory marked South Carolina State’s first-ever win over USC-Upstate and improved their season record to 18-17. With this result, the Lady Bulldogs tied for their most wins in a season since 2003, when current head coach Nakeya Hall was a senior player on the team.

In the opening game, South Carolina State managed only two hits and two runs, falling short against USC-Upstate. However, in Game 2, they responded with five runs on eleven hits. A senior pitcher threw a complete game to secure the historic win for her team.

“I am extremely proud of our student-athletes and excited for what they’ve accomplished; these wins are a direct reflection of their hard work, commitment, and resilience throughout the season,” said SC State head coach Nakeya Hall. Hall added: “They have earned these moments, and it’s rewarding to see their efforts translate into success. Our focus now is on maintaining this momentum as we prepare for the tournament and continuing to represent our program at a high level.”

Looking ahead, South Carolina State will close out Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with an away series against North Carolina Central beginning Saturday at Durham. The university’s athletic program competes at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level across fourteen sports.
