The South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs were defeated by Howard University 11-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship game on May 9 at TowneBank Field.
This result marks the end of a season in which South Carolina State achieved several milestones under first-year head coach Nakeya Hall. The team finished with a record-setting 23 wins, including their first victory over Charleston Southern in 22 years and their first-ever win against USC-Upstate.
Seven players from South Carolina State were named to the All-MEAC Postseason Team, and a freshman earned the title of MEAC Rookie of the Year. In the championship game, South Carolina State recorded four hits, highlighted by a home run and two runs batted in. Despite advancing through the elimination bracket, they could not overcome Howard’s offense.
Howard drew eight walks, stole two bases, and limited their own strikeouts to just two while playing error-free defense throughout the title match. These factors contributed to their decisive win over South Carolina State.
Looking ahead, only seniors will not return for next season, leaving South Carolina State with what is described as an even stronger nucleus for future competition.
